Telangana stir takes violent turn: Non-locals attacked on BHEL campus

Violence starts after recruitment test at BHEL

Seven held following complaint from two Vizag residents

SANGAREDDY: The Telangana movement is taking a violent turn with some local persons manhandling non-locals.

A written test was held for recruitment of 317 technical personnel at BHEL on Sunday, which was attended by more than 12,000 aspirants. However, the result was not announced on Monday, as expected.

Fearing that non-locals would grab their chance, more than 50 local persons formed a group, held a motorcycle rally from BHEL main gate to Keerthi Mahal in the township on Wednesday and attacked six non-locals.

Non-locals thrashed

Knowing that some non-locals were residing in quarter no 849-D, around 15 persons entered the room, thrashed and forced them to leave. The non-locals in the room reportedly included two persons from Visakhapatnam and three from Kerala. Though it was informed that two more persons were from Tamil Nadu this was not confirmed. The three persons from Kerala, who fled the BHEL campus after the attack, were willing to lodge a complaint and the police expect them to be back in a couple of days.

Two persons who came under attack were identified as Ramana Murthy and Naresh, both from Visakhapatnam district. Based on their complaint, police arrested seven persons and registered cases under IPC 341 and 506. The arrests may go beyond 10.

13 bikes seized

According to P. Narayana, Circle Inspector, Ramachandrapuram, police seized 13 motorcycles, which were used by the locals. Police are confident that they would arrest all those involved in the incident as the seized vehicles were with them.

Confirming the incident, Superintendent of Police V.C. Sajjanar informed The Hindu that the local police officials acted firmly and in time, preventing the spread of such incidents.

Hostel inmates stage dharna:

novel protest: Inmates of student-managed hostels staging a dharna in Ongole on Thursday.

ONGOLE: About 600 inmates of social welfare hostels took out a rally and staged dharna near Collectorate here Thursday demanding the government to pay their scholarships immediately so that they can run their hostels till their examinations are over.

As the government has not released the scholarships, students found it difficult to run their hostels and closed them from January 20 to February 3. Following an agitation by the students on February 3, District Collector, Kantilal Dande intervened and directed the Social Welfare officials to persuade the traders continue supplies of rice, dhal, edible oil and other provisions on deferred payment and ensured reopening of the hostels. He also promised the students that he would prevail on the government to release their scholarships without delay to avoid problems.

Yet the government has not even renewed the scholarships of 600 students and nor sanctioned scholarships to about 500 fresh students till now. As the arrears mounted to Rs. 20 lakhs, traders are refusing to continue supplies basing on the oral assurances of officials of social welfare department.

Scholarships

The government had to release scholarships amounting to Rs. 40 lakhs to 1,100 inmates of the two boys hostels in Ongole town at the rate of Rs. 520 per month for degree students, Rs. 620 for postgraduate students and Rs. 960 each for those pursuing MBA or B Tech courses.

It became well nigh impossible for students to run the hostels anymore, said John, secretary of boys hostel.

The agitating students met the Collector again on Thursday and implored with him to help them get scholarships. Mr Kantilal Dande asked the students to meet him at 5 p.m. on Monday so that he would talk to concerned authorities at Hyderabad and resolve their problem.

In the first incident, tragedy struck a contingent of 57 villagers on Thursday while they were returning to their native places around Sholingher in Tamil Nadu after attending a marriage late on Wednesday night at Chinna Kammapalle village near Tirupati.

Ten of them died, including eight on the spot, when the lorry in which they were travelling plunged into a dry tank bed while negotiating a steep curve before Karvetnagar, about 35 km from here. Two succumbed on the way to the Government-SVRR Hospital, Tirupati. The other 47 were admitted to the hospital with injuries. The condition of some of them was said to be critical.

People from nearby villages and the police who reached the spot physically lifted all the injured into an APSRTC bus passing-by and rushed them to the hospital.

The bodies of the victims were shifted to the mortuary in a tractor trailer.

All those travelling in the lorry were said to be from Pallipattu, Tiruttani and Sholingher. The newly weds were, however, not in the ill-fated vehicle, which rolled down the embankment throwing all its inmates out, as the driver lost control over the vehicle while negotiating the curve.
