Can't transfer visa details from an old passport to new one

During my last trip to the U.S., my passport was damaged. The passport has a US B1 visa valid till 2016. My new passport refers to my old passport number and the contents of the visa sheets are legible in the old passport. Can I retain both the passports and travel using the earlier visa or can I transfer the visa from the old passport to the new one and if so what is the procedure or do I need to reapply for a new visa by forgoing the older visa and, if so, how do I formally cancel the same?

You may travel carrying your old and new passports if the visa in your old passport is valid and not damaged. If the old passport is in poor condition, or if the visa in your old passport is damaged, we recommend you apply for a new visa. You cannot transfer your old visa to the new passport. To apply for a new visa, please schedule an appointment and come in for a personal interview, remembering to bring any and all relevant documents.

My dad has a 10 year multiple entry US visa stamped in 2008 March. But he lost his passport last month and is in the process of getting a new one. To get the US visit visa stamping on his new passport, will he have to apply afresh, or is it possible that he send his passport and get it stamped with old info? Please let us know so we can plan on getting the paperwork together as required.

Once your father receives his new passport, he needs to apply for a new visa if he wants one.

On the new DS-160 online visa application form, have him respond “yes” to the questions of whether he has ever had a lost/stolen passport and whether he had a valid U.S. visa. He can schedule his visa appointment online with VFS after he's paid his fee and has his HDFC receipt. When he comes for the interview, he should bring with him copies of his previous visa and the FIR police report about the lost passport. Any time a visa is lost or stolen, the visa holder should notify their local embassy or consulate and send a copy of the visa, if available. The U.S. government wants to know if your visa is no longer in your possession. We can cancel your visa in our computer system so no one else can travel on it.

I have a multiple entry B2 visa valid up to November 2017. I wish to visit my two daughters and their children in the U.S. I have 3 questions regarding this: Is there any limit on the frequency of my visits? What has to be the minimum period of lapse, if required, between two successive visits? What is the maximum period of stay allowed in one visit?

You may travel any number of times while the visa is valid for purposes appropriate to the visa category, with no minimum period of lapse between successive visits. Your entry and duration of stay each time would be decided by the immigration officials at the port of entry. Normally, they grant up to six months' stay on a B2 visa.

I would like to know whether a girl can attend the visa interview with mehndi on both sides of her hands. Will the mehndi affect the fingerprinting?

The U.S. government has fingerprinted many people with mehndi or other inks on their hands. Normally, mehndi does not alter fingerprinting and you may attend the interview if you have mehndi on your hands. However, if your fingerprints are obscured or we cannot capture a clear set of prints, then you may be asked to reschedule your interview.

My granddaughter's marriage is in the U.S in May. I want to attend the marriage. What are the requirements for a visit visa?

Successful applicants for B1/B2 (business/tourist) visas must be able to demonstrate to the interviewing officer that they have a residence outside of the United States to which they will return at the end of their temporary stay in the U.S. They also need to demonstrate that they will be able to pay for their trip and that they will stay in the appropriate visas status. For example, someone issued a B1/B2 visa cannot work in the United States. Applicants have only a few minutes to make their case to the Consular Officer, who will take into account a variety of factors in making their decision. The officer will also enter notes into our system so that future officers can see what happened. To see tourist visa requirements, please visit our website. I was approved for a tourist visa, but one of my family members was denied a tourist visa. Why?

First, please take a look at the previous answer on what adjudicating officers look for. Sometimes, one family member can more easily demonstrate those ties than another. In some instances, parents may be well established in India but their grown child who lives in the same house may not have developed ties that are as strong.
